Post-weaning is a key and particularly sensitive phase in pig farming. At this time, the piglet is confronted with several simultaneous changes: abrupt feed transition, separation from the sow, adaptation to a new environment and still incomplete maturation of the digestive and immune system. These factors combined generate weaning stress that is recognized as one of the main determinants of disturbances observed in the newly weaned piglet (Pluske et al., 1997; Lallès et al., 2004; Tang et al., 2022).
These changes are frequently accompanied by a transient decrease in feed intake, as well as changes in intestinal structure and function, such as villous atrophy and temporary decrease in digestive and absorption capacities. These alterations can limit the efficiency of digestion and nutrient valorization during the first days after weaning (Pluske et al., 1997; Lallès et al., 2004; Tang et al., 2022).
The post-weaning transition phase is thus recognised as decisive for the growth dynamics of piglets. Insufficient intake and transiently impaired digestive functionality may influence the growth performance observed in the first weeks after weaning (Heo et al., 2013; Arnaud et al., 2023).
Even in farms that control digestive disorders and limit the use of antibiotics, this period remains strategic. An imbalance at this stage can result in more variable growth, increased batch heterogeneity and a higher proportion of light piglets coming out of post-weaning, which may impact the subsequent performance of the animals (Arnaud et al., 2023).
In this context, nutritional strategies aimed at supporting digestive functionality and nutrient valorization efficiency are an important lever for securing post-weaning performance and sustainably supporting the piglet’s physiological transition (Heo et al., 2013; Tang et al., 2022).
NATUPOWER® is a natural solution developed to support piglets during the post-weaning phase. Its use is part of a nutritional approach aimed at promoting digestive conditions conducive to good feed value and supporting a dynamic of regular growth of piglets.
A concept based on the physiological specificities of the piglet
The NATUPOWER® concept is based on taking into account the physiological particularities of the piglet at the time of weaning, in particular:
Weaning stress is recognized as a major factor in altering gut structure and functionality, impacting digestion, nutrient absorption, and feed intake. The ability of piglets to maintain good digestive functionality is thus a determining factor in the growth performance observed in post-weaning (Lallès et al., 2004; Tang et al., 2022; Arnaud et al., 2023).
Principles of action
The nutritional approach associated with NATUPOWER® is based on several complementary axes:
NATUPOWER® was evaluated in zootechnical trials conducted at the MG2MIX experimental station, with 0.1% incorporation in 1st and 2nd age piglet feed. Under these test conditions, the use of NATUPOWER® was associated with:
Recommendations for use
NATUPOWER® is intended for use in 1st and 2nd age piglets, at an incorporation rate of 1 kg per tonne of finished feed (0.1%). It can be used in feeds presented in flour or pellets.
A nutritional approach to support post-weaning
By helping to maintain favourable digestive conditions and good feed value, NATUPOWER® is part of the nutritional strategies aimed at supporting piglets during the sensitive post-weaning phase.
